Professor Toru Tanigawa joined the Japan Development Bank (currently the Development Bank of Japan) in 1973. As a member of the bank, he was involved in various kinds of activities, including credit analysis, management planning, and international affairs (his assignments include Executive Director of the Los Angeles office of the bank). After he left the bank in 2000, he went to the United States as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University, where he conducted a study on business incubation mechanisms and industry-academia collaboration systems in Silicon Valley. While he was there, he also worked on establishing a support organization for entrepreneurs, and acted as an advisor to start-up companies. In 2003, he assumed the position of Professor at Kyushu University. Professor Tanigawa took the lead at the university in building industry-academia collaborations, one of which was the Intellectual Property Management Center of Kyushu University. He has been in charge of the establishment of QREC, the entrepreneurship education and research organization, since 2009. Professor Tanigawa\u2019s fields of specialization are regional economic policy, entrepreneurship, and industry-academia collaboration. Professor Tanigawa graduated from the Faculty of Law, Kyoto University. He is a councilor of the Japan Society for Science Policy and Research Management.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Robert T. Huang is a founder of SYNNEX Corporation, Fortune 500 company, based in Freemont, California. Dr. Huang served as SYNNEX’s President and CEO for 28 years from 1980 until 2008. He retired as Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2010. During his 30 years tenure leading SYNNEX, he grew the company to \uff048 billion in annual revenue and the IT distributor employed more than 7,000 people worldwide. Dr. Huang holds a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, a master’s in electrical engineering and statistics from the University of Rochester, NY, a master’s in management science from the Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and anhonorary doctorate degree from Kyushu University. He was elected by Computer Reseller News as one of the 25 most influential executives in computer industries and inducted to CRN’s Industry Hall of Fame in November of 2004. Dr. Huang serves on the Advisory Board of Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is a Kyushu Fellow, and contributed to the founding of Kyushu University Robert T. Huang Entrepreneurship Center (QREC). Dr. Huang was born in Taiwan.<\/p>\n

He has published in numerous international refereed journals on innovation policy, industrial and competitiveness policy and technology entrepreneurship, and has also consulted widely for international agencies such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, various government agencies in Singapore such as A*STAR, EDB and IDA, and many high tech firms in Asia. An entrepreneur who co-founded three companies prior to joining academia, he is now an active angel investor and\/or board member of several high tech start-ups in Silicon Valley, Singapore, China and Malaysia. He was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at U.C. Berkeley and a visiting researcher at Stanford University and KTH, Sweden. Dr. Ashir Ahmed was born in Bangladesh. His research aims to produce and promote ICT based social services for the unreached community in the world. In 2007, he joined Kyushu University as a guest associate professor under the research superstar program by Japan Science and Technology Agency. Through this program, he developed a joint collaboration with Grameen and Kyushu University and produced numerous international projects e.g. GramWeb (a village information platform), ePassbook (an electronic gadget for unreached community), 0 portable clinic and IGPF (Income Generation Project for Farmers using ICT). Inside Kyushu University, he developed a team of multi-disciplinary researchers which ultimately produced two research organizations e.g. GCL (Grameen Creative Lab) and GTL (Grameen Technology Lab) in 2009. In 2003 to 2006, Dr. Ashir Ahmed worked for NTT Communications to develop SIP based applications for home electronic devices. In 2000-2002, he worked as an MTS1 in Avaya Labs, Japan to R&D Avaya\u2019s SIP based products for Japanese market. Dr. Ashir Ahmed received his Ph.D. in Information Sciences from Tohoku University in 1999.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mr. Sungene Ryang leads the IDEO Asia (Tokyo) team in helping its startup, small- to medium- sized enterprise, and multinational clients define new offers and opportunity areas, foster creativity within individuals and organizations, and deliver innovation both inside and outside of Japan.Before founding the IDEO Tokyo office, Mr. Sungene Ryang was part of the leadership team of the Consumer Experience practice in IDEO\u2019s Palo Alto office, where he led the group\u2019s business in East Asia and served as a catalyst for IDEO\u2019s subsequent work in the region.<\/span>

At the same time, He taught a course, Developing World Prosthetics, to develop orthopedic devices for developing countries as an instructor of MIT D-lab. Currently, Endo works on human physical augmentation with robotic technology as an associate researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories. He is also a co-founder and director of a non-profit organization, D-Leg, and leader of See-D Contest which coordinate a education program and business plan contest of appropriate technologies in undeveloped countries. Startup Weekends are all about learning through the act of creating. They are kinds of educational projects for who would like to start new businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n

On average, half of Startup Weekend\u2019s attendees have technical or design backgrounds, the other half have business backgrounds. eginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts.<\/span><\/p>\n
